Vector Inspiration by VectorTuts+

For a long time I didn't want to acknowledge the Graphic Design, Vector/Computer Art side of my art. However now after being published in a book and getting a little recognition I have let it go. Here is a little bit of love from a blog/website called VectorTuts+. They featured a Flickr group I am a member of and a Tryst poster I designed. Thanks goes out to the fine folks at VectorTuts+. Here is a link to the post.

Funky Finds Spring Fling Review 2009

ChickenBilly's first art/indie/craft fair. It was fun to go through the process. It was great to challenge myself to get out there. It actually was made real easy with the wonderful staff of Funky Finds. Jessica and Joe make things better!!! I also had the encouragement of my good friends Tara to the T and Joey Seeman of Sindustry Designs in the house. It was hot as hell in more than one way. Good times had by all. See the funky bunch next year!!! Check the link below for my booth photos and merch pics

Fire Ant - 100 Flips #20

Number 20 of what will one day be 100 in all. The latest in my quest to design 100 flip drawings. The fire ant is a old childhood friend. Well not friend but from my childhood. When I was a kid I use to make my own ant farm out of old olive jars. Fun to watch them work through the glass. Watch out these bad boys will/have left a mark. They like to bite!

Diana Camera Print

I was inspired by a friend of mine, Mark Penland who is over at the TCC Northeast campus in the photo department, to create a woodcut of a classic Diana plastic camera. This was my first two color print. I think it came out nice. I also was inspired to do some experimentation, I printed on newspaper and one of my T-shirt shop rags. Horse Head Print

Measuring just 6 inches by 4 and three quarters of a inch is the "Horse Head Print". Brought to you in flat black speed ball style. Actually I used screen printing ink figuring, "What's the difference"? I may or may not print some other horse and or western related items. Maybe the boot from a past Tryst poster. Who knows. Enjoy!

Flip, Flips & Flipping!

The idea was to take a concept and see it through until I had finished 100 designs. I started with a pencil sketch and finished with the vector, or for illustration purposes, computer art. I only made it to 19 finished designs. Looks like I already have one new years resolution even before Christmas is over. I wanted to finish the 100 designs and put them in a book for sale. Time will tell. One thing I do know is the 19 finished are available to view with the link below. Leave me a comment and tell me which one is your favorite.
What is a flip you ask? I only draw half of the design and then mirror it. Copy paste people. I then take the two sides and fit them together to make one design. Cool right?link

Christmas Wish

I was reminded today again how precious life can be and how short it is. This reminder left a few thoughts in my head and heart. So this is my Christmas wish for everyone. During the holiday season be with the one's you love. Let's the little things go. Don't let small and insignificant things ruin what can be a wonderful time with friends and family. In the word's of someone who was a great one, "I don't give a rats ass". So keep the spirit and "Don't give a rats ass" about the petty things and love the ones your with!

Monday Morning Art - Mr. Crown

This Monday Morning piece of art is from the screen print archive. It is titled "Mr. Crown". It is literally the visualization of those little demons in our head when we have been drinking and wake the next morning to some bad feelings. The pounding headache or a woozy feeling you just can't shake. Mr. Crown is like a girl at the bar one hour before closing. You get the picture right? Mr. Crown was part of the Mud in the Sun show a few years back at Casa Libre. He along with some other friends will be for sale in the shop soon.

Monday Morning Art - Dirty Blue Martini

During the holidays it happens a lot. Stiff drinks at all those holiday party's. Well with this Monday morning art piece titled "Dirty Blue Martini" I tried to take my style and illustrate how a feeling looks. Maybe I got closer to what you see when you feel this feeling but I think it gets across the mood at the very least. Actually I think it is more of what you would see starring into a dirty blue martini after a few of them. Hey have a great week!

Monday Morning Art - Desert Beast

Desert Beast is a piece inspired by the Sonoran Desert. My wife and I lived in Tucson, Arizona for three wonderful years. It is truly a wonderland of discovery. The Sonoran Desert has all kind of snakes, birds, mammals and mythical beast. It also has some of the most unique plant life. This is the essence of this art piece. The plants are just as tough as the animals. It is the way of the west and more specific the desert.

Production and the Wizard of OZ

As a kid I was always fascinated by the way things worked. I was forever tearing my toys apart to see how they worked. Well I never lost that spirit of how do and it eventually turned into how to. Now as an adult I am fascinated with how to's. I even started documenting some of my own how it was done images. I think it is fun to look back behind the curtain to appreciate the grunt work that is done. One sometimes only sees the finished product and not the journey to appreciate. Below are three production picture sets revealing how I created art.

Monday Morning Art - Star of the Sea

Star of the sea was created in Nacogdoches, Texas in my tiny studio apartment. I was a student at Stephen F. Austin State University. It was made as a gift for my then girlfriends now wife Marisa. Marisa means "Star of the Sea". I drew a boat on the sea. It is abstract but look at it long enough and you will figure it out. As you can imagine it reminds me of her and that time period of about 10 years ago.
Hey have a great week and a Happy Thanksgiving!

The Greatest T-Shirts Never Made

I bet if I asked everyone could come up with one. T-shirt slogans have been around about as long as the T-shirt themselves. I should start a list and illustrate it and make a book. You should steal this idea and do it for me! Once a group of friends with my wife and I were heading to Waxahachie to the Webb gallery to catch a show. We came up with some good ones. "Beware of the Faux Jesus" and "I Love Tire Fires". In the past my wife and I have come up with random gems like "Tito is on lunch" and others either too funny or obnoxious to list here. I think I am going to start a database of drawings that illustrate the sayings. Do you have a good one. Send it to me and I will make a drawing of it! Link below to the new directory.

Found Art!

Created in 2002 I discovered these mixed media pieces (8 in all) in an old portfolio a few days ago. My wife and I have moved over five times since 2002 so I do not remember these at all. It is always fun to discover old friends. Now I offer them to you. They are fun and simple and will fit almost any decor. Maybe you are looking for a gift for a friend or family. Why not some art! Each piece is 5" x 5" white pencil on acrylic on smooth water color paper. See link below for pieces available.

Supermarket Blues

Seriously one of the best songs on one of the best albums of all time. Eugene McDaniels - Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse, Supermarket Blues. It may only be a four minute song but wow it really kills. I haven't been inspired to draw something directly from a song in years! This song did it for me. The song is so vivid in my mind and yes that is exactly what the can of peas looks like. Wikipedia link below for all your education needs.

Monday Morning Art - Bread Sculptors

I am going to try something new. Each Monday morning I will post a art piece from the past and tell you a little background or story about it. This week is "The Bread Sculptors". The Bread Sculptors combines two of my favorite past times. One, squeezing bread into abstract shapes trying to figure out what they might resemble. Kind of like seeing shapes in clouds. Two, spontaneous silly dance party's. Yo know, when you are walking through a room and you hear a song and the music just moves you!. Well this is the essence of the Bread Sculptors. Funny bread men dancing to a favorite song. Have a great week!

The original drawing was made back in 2000 in the parking lot of the Dallas Galleria. I was down and out working for Bananna Republic during the holiday season. I was on break sitting in my car thinking about going home for Christmas and drew this tree. It now has a life of it's own on this poster.
